Research Studies

There are few ophthalmologists in Charleston, SC – or the country – that are as heavily involved in ophthalmic research as Dr. Kerry Solomon. Dr. Solomon is the Director of the Carolina Eyecare Research Institute, which tests and improves technologies and procedures for conditions and procedures such as cataract surgery, refractive lens surgery, LASIK vision correction, glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. His passion for research is fueled by his dedication to superior patient care and results.

Dr. Solomon’s commitment to research and innovation affords unique opportunities to his patients, who are often among the first in the world to benefit from new technology. Cataract surgery and LASIK patients from areas like Myrtle Beach and Columbia, SC, as well as Savannah, GA make the trip to Charleston, SC, for the world-class, next-generation technology available exclusively to Dr. Solomon.

The Importance of Research

Procedures like LASIK and advanced cataract surgery are producing better outcomes for more individuals than ever before, and that is the result of continued research and innovation. The technology has improved precision and safety, and many individuals who were not candidates in the past can now safely undergo these procedures. The diversity of lenses and the capability of the lasers now routinely produce results that exceed 20/20.

Laser and device manufacturers often seek out Dr. Solomon’s input on the development of new products and technologies. This allows him to remain at the forefront of the latest advances in eye surgery, and to often times be one of the first in the world to use new technology. His knowledge of and experience with new technology and techniques allow him to provide more and better options to his patients as he develops a customized plan for their care.

Ongoing Studies

Refractive Outcomes Evaluation of an Image Guided System + Intraoperative Wavefront Measurements

If you have been diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes and have astigmatism, you may qualify for a research study that evaluates the clinical results of a system used in the planning and execution of laser assisted cataract surgery, as well as wavefront measurements taken at time of surgery for the treatment of pre-existing astigmatism using a toric lens or corneal incisions.

Dropless Cataract Surgery Study

If you have been diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes and are ready to undergo surgical removal, you may qualify for this research study. This study investigates the use of a medication that is placed into the eye during surgery to reduce the use of drops after the procedure.

More information available at www.clinicaltrials.gov.

Multifocal Intraocular Lens Study

Clinical study to investigate the visual outcomes, safety and efficacy of a new lens designed to provide both far and near vision in patients diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes and undergoing routine cataract surgery.
