How Much Should LASIK Cost…and Why?

If you’re in the market for LASIK eye surgery, in Charleston, South Carolina or anywhere else in the country, you’ve probably noticed lots of ads for low-cost LASIK and wondered why you should pay more than $999 per eye. Well, to start with, those low prices you see on billboards and hear in radio ads usually exclude around 99% of prospective patients because the qualifying criteria are so limited. Those figures can also be misleading because they typically don’t include all facets of your care.

At the practice of LASIK specialist Dr. Kerry Solomon, everyone gets our signature LASIK package, regardless of your prescription and whether or not you have astigmatism, and it covers everything from start to finish. That includes:

Your pre-operative exam

This is where we spend 2 hours evaluating your vision, assessing your current prescription, and doing diagnostic testing to find out if your corneas are the right shape and thickness to undergo LASIK. We also discuss financing options, special pricing, and scheduling.

Prescription eye drops and any other medications

Your single quote for LASIK does not include the prescription drops and oral medications that you will use for optimal comfort and healing following your procedure. The prescription can be filed through insurance and coverage depends on benefits. Consider this when determining the cost of the procedure.

Surgical facility, including technology

Although our LASIK prices are comparable to our competitors’, our facility and the technology we use are considered among the best in the country. We perform topography-guided LASIK using advanced, blade-free technology. Some of the bargains you see advertised are for LASIK using a blade or older diagnostic equipment and methodologies.

Surgeon’s fee

My fee is comparable to most LASIK providers in my area, and my patients get the peace of mind that comes with having their procedure performed by a board-certified ophthalmologist and one of the “Top 50 Opinion Leaders in the Fields of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.” I also employ a team of experienced, highly trained surgical assistants who see to your safety and provide outstanding care.

Postoperative care

You’ll continue to see us for follow-up care for up to a year after your procedure. In the rare case that your procedure requires an adjustment or I think you could benefit from some fine-tuning, that cost is covered in the price of your original LASIK procedure. This is one of the reasons our practice has such a remarkably high rate of patient satisfaction. We’re not happy unless you’re happy.

Other factors that influence the cost of LASIK include what part of the country you’re in. If you live in a very competitive market, you may find better deals, but be sure to read the fine print. The national average cost of LASIK is between $2,000 and $2,500 per eye, and at my practice, we think that should include everything covered above.
